Online therapy
Although telehealth may seem new, it has been available for many years. In fact, there have been studies showing that for some mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, it can be just as good as face to face therapy. Of course, how someone engages with and responds to telehealth varies, and this may all depend on individual circumstances and needs, but I welcome people who are curious about it to just give it a go. There are many benefits to telehealth services, and I really appreciate that people of all abilities are able to access psychological therapy. I have seen people whilst they have been at work, at home, and at social events. No longer is it necessary to take extended time off work, find transport, and travel out. So long as it is possible to slip away for about 50 minutes and there is a comfortable and confidential environment, therapy is possible! Personally, I really enjoy offering telehealth as the flexibility allows me to offer therapy to my fullest capacity and as such I can fit in more things in during the day and thus allowing me to balance my life, and this brings me real joy.
Benefits of online therapy
Be in the comfort of your own space
Choose to do therapy and grow in a secure and confidential space of your choosing.Fit it into your busy schedule
You're a busy human and have always struggled to fit in time to work on yourself? Telehealth allows you to save time with travel and you don't have to schedule time away from your day to day life, like work or finding a baby sitter.Accessible
Telehealth is very accessible and for those who struggle to leave the home and travel out, without expending so much energy and effort, it is a fantastic option!
Myths about online therapy
Therapy online is a lazy way to do therapy
This is simply not true at all. In fact, because online therapy is so accessible and convenient, the stress around travelling out to appointments and finding time to travel out is minimised and as such, people have more mental space to do active work in therapy.
Therapists who provide online therapy are inexperienced or are being lazy
This is not necessarily true. Some therapists opt to provide online therapy because it offers more flexibility in their lives. Those who would otherwise not be able to stay in the workforce because of demanding needs in their lives, can stay in the workforce and offer valuable and skilled services. Our Clinical Psychologist is very skilled and experienced having worked across NSW Health and private practice over the past 13 years.
You will not be able to gain a humanistic connection via online therapy
We cannot argue against the value of seeing someone face to face. We appreciate that seeing someone in person can add extra value and helps build connection. However, building a humanistic connection and having an authentic therapeutic relationship with your therapist is very much possible and is not lost via telehealth.
Online therapy is not effective
Actually, recent research has indicated that online therapy offer similar results as face to face therapy. However, online therapy is not suitable for all presentations and there will be some instances whereby face to face therapy is more appropriate. To find out whether online therapy is suitable for you, feel free to contact us.
