Tia Ven - Clinical Psychologist
Psychological therapy that is accessible in the comfort of your own space. I am a telehealth Clinical Psychologist with 13 years of experience treating anxiety, depression, women's health, low self esteem, OCD, chronic pain, and chronic health. I value the diversity in my experience which I have gained by working across NSW Health and private practice. I enjoy working with mothers, women from all walks of life, those experiencing mental health concerns for the first time, those suffering from anxiety, and those adjusting to chronic health conditions.
I believe that it is important that everyone is connected with a therapist that they vibe with. Reaching out for help is already hard enough, and I firmly believe that people should feel comfortable to be themselves and share information in a safe environment, with the knowledge that their therapist will provide them with honest support.
I am registered with the Psychology Board of Australia with an endorsement in Clinical Psychology and am a member of the Australian Association for Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy as well as the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc. I enjoy working across many spaces and have opened up Connect 2 Health Psychology so that I can offer psychological therapy to busy humans who find face to face therapy too confronting, those who enjoy the convenience of online therapy, and those just wanting to grow and thrive. Personally, I really enjoy offering telehealth and recent research has indicated that for a range of issues, telehealth can offer similiar benefits as face to face therapy. A lot of the people I have worked with, have said similiar things and I am proud to say that many of the people I have worked with, have appreciated the convenience and usefulness of therapy via telehealth.

values
Curious & Authentic
I genuinely want to know about the life and background of the person sitting in front of me. My curiosity guides my interaction with people and as such I may spend a lot of time asking questions. Through this process I am able to come to a more holistic understanding of your issues and your life in context.
I believe that everyone in the therapy space should feel comfortable to be their authentic selves because in doing so, people are able to share more and grow more. This is important for both myself as the therapist and you, and I often encourage it in my personal life and in the therapy space. My authentic self is warm, compassionate, humorous, loves to be with my family, loves to relax, is a hard worker, and gets so much joy at seeing others achieve their goals. To be authentic, involves being aware of one’s own inner experiences and so far, my realness has been appreciated by the people I work with.
Collaborative
I will often share my understanding of your situation with you, and let you know what I think might help you and what I can see is blocking your process. I believe sharing and considering an outsider’s point of view can open up new possibilities for a person. I often check in with what I am hearing, and I appreciate people being straightforward with me. I encourage people to set their own goal/s and be active during the therapy process as therapy is about change and only you, can make that change. My therapy process is then very collaborative and empowering.
Diverse
I know that people come with their own unique experiences and knowledge. One of the most enjoyable aspects of my work, is that I have worked with and have come across a wide variety of people. People from various cultural backgrounds, various gender identities, those from LGBTIQA+ communities, across the lifespan in adulthood, and with a wide range of communication needs. Over the years, I have not only met some amazing people, but I have gained wonderful experiences which I would like to say, has helped me to connect with a variety of people and understand what particular tools and therapies might be useful with particular issue/s.
As I am of South East Asian ethnicity, naturally, those from similiar backgrounds have found my style and approach quite understanding and comforting.
Practical
I highly value teaching people practical skills and strategies to navigate through issues so that their goals can be achieved. I believe people come to therapy to change something in their life for the better, whether that is to sleep better, or regulate their emotions better, etc.
Services and Interests
I work with a variety of presentations, but I am deeply passionate about providing evidence based therapies that are accessible for all kinds of humans! Just like work, some people enjoy being able to fit in therapy into their busy day. I tailor and individualise treatment around the following issues:
Women: All stages of life including mothers, women lacking confidence, fertility issues, grieving, empty nesters, relationship problems, and retirement
Low Self Confidence: Those just wanting to live more fulfilling lives with and for themselves
Those experiencing a mental health issue for the first time: Getting help early on is really important
Anxiety disorders: To improve symptoms of anxiety disorders associated with social anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, specific phobias, panic disorder, agoraphobia, and emetophobia
Depression and adjustment disorders: To improve specific symptoms of depression such as trouble sleeping, negative thoughts, motivational issues, lethargy, low self esteem, withdrawal, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, agitation, and unhelpful coping strategies
Chronic health conditions: Those struggling to adjust to the symptoms and effects of their chronic health conditions, like chronic pain, cancer, and spinal cord injuries
Neurological conditions: Those struggling to adjust to the symptoms and effects of neurological conditions such as Stroke, MS, Parkinson's Disease, MND, Brain Injuries
Therapies
I am a firm believer in providing therapy that is active, collaborative, evidence based, humanistic, and tailored to the person's problem/s and context. I am experienced with:
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy involves gaining an in depth understanding of and changing the thoughts and behaviours that are impacting on your problem/s and making it difficult for you to achieve your goal/s
Schema Therapy: Schema Therapy involves understanding and changing unhelpful schemas in your life. Schemas are unhelpful thinking and emotional responses which develop through unmet needs as a child. They are often triggered by daily life events and can lead to unhelpful coping responses. The purpose is to help you build more adaptive and healthy schemas in your life
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: This type of therapy involves coming to terms with and accepting negative experiences such as thoughts, feelings, and circumstances. One of the goals of ACT is to live a more meaningful life which is informed by being mindful and guided by values
Solutions focused therapy: This is a brief and short term therapy which is very goal focused and looks at solutions rather than problems, in order to change
Individual Dialectical Behaviour Therapy: This is a type of CBT which focuses on learning skills to change and regulate distressing emotions, whilst also accepting distressing situations and who you are as a person. It is about engaging in more adaptive rather than maladaptive coping responses. It is particularly useful for those who experience very strong emotions and have trouble regulating their emotions
Motivational interviewing: This is a therapy style which aims at reducing blockages to change and minimising barriers to change, in order to enhance the change process
What is the therapy process
At the beginning
First of all, tell me about what brought you to therapy, you in the context of your life, your goals, your problem/s in detail, your expectations, and anything else you would like me to know! In return, I will listen to you, ask you a lot of questions!, let you know about what to expect with therapy (and the procedures, policies, and admin), my own understanding of you in the context of your life and your problem/s, and answer any of your question/s to the best-est of my ability. You can then reflect and decide whether I am the right fit for you and if therapy is right for you (no pressure).Growing
OK so you have decided to return! It is now getting into the more serious stuff. Depending on the things we uncovered earlier (and we will continue to uncover more), I will provide you with a treatment plan and we can start to begin the process of therapy! This differs for everyone but I aim to provide you with active and practical strategies to start managing your problem/s and work towards your goal/s. You are a part of this process too.Staying well
We never know how long it takes to get to this point, and if you have reached this point then you should really acknowledge your gains and reward yourself! You would have come a long way. It is time to work on a plan to maintain what you have achieved. You will think about, what has helped? What hasn't helped? What can you keep doing to stay well? What indicates to you that you are slipping backwards? What plan do you have to kick yourself back up? The growth never ends and at this point, you may or may not need ad-hoc support every so often.
